A three-day meeting of experts (plenary session and 4 workshops) to discuss various issues such as national hand cleanliness campaigns, quality indicators with regard to antibiotics policy and infection control, point prevalence studies (PPS) on hospital infections and the use of antibiotics in hospitals, residential homes and care homes.

09/11/2010: 4 workshops
1. How to begin, how to implement and how to sustain a national hand hygiene campaign
Exchange of experience in setting up national hand cleanliness campaigns, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of proposed campaigns and drafting a list of key elements for the success of such campaigns;
2. Indicators of hospital infection control and antimicrobial management
Discussion on the need for reliable quality indicators for hospital infection control and antibiotic policy, a common (ECDC – Belgian presidency) publication presenting indicators and a critical overview of existing experience with public reporting;
3. To roll out a common European methodology for PPS of HAI and antimicrobial use in acute care hospital
Discussion of the results of the pilot phase of the European point prevalence study and launch of a real study;
4. The European methodology for PPS of HAI and antimicrobial use in long term care facilities
Review of existing structures and programmes to control infection and antibiotic policy in homes and care centres in Europe, establishing a European framework of minimum safety requirements for European homes and care centres.
