Animals and Plants

  • Anyone who puts animals out to pasture needs to pay special attention to their health and welfare during a cold snap. The Animal Welfare Department of the FPS Health, Food Chain Safety provides the following short overview of dos and don’ts.

  • Today, 26 October 2012, reports in different media appeared stating that faulty information provided by the Federal Public Service for Health, Safety in the Food Chain and the Environment on www.fytoweb.be, the official website relating to pesticides in Belgium, was the reason for an erroneous choice of product by an organic farmer in the Walloon Region.

  • A Belgian dog breeder was caught early this morning in Oudenburg by the Animal Welfare Inspectorate of the FPS Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment regarding the illegal import of 64 puppies from Slovakia. The animals are in good health, but none of the dogs has the required passport for import into and sale in our country. The puppies were taken into custody on site, pending the final decision.

  • On 22 November 2012, the Contractual Research Cell and the Directorate-General for Animals, Plants and Foodstuffs of the FPS Health, Food chain safety and Environment is organising a fifth joint symposium on Contractual Research on behalf of the FPS. This year, recent scientific developments in the field of animal health are on the agenda. This symposium is aimed at interested parties from the government bodies, the research world, analytical laboratories and the agricultural sector.

  • The Animal Welfare Unit of the Belgian Federal Public Service (FPS) of Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment hosts a seminar on developing an animal-friendly approach to animal nuisance. It will take place on 4th October 2012 as part of the World Animal Day. Cities and municipalities, local police authorities, animal welfare organizations and other interested associations can now register. Participation is free.

  • From 23 to 27 July, representatives of 175 countries, international organisations and NGOs gathered in Geneva for the 62nd meeting of the CITES Standing Committee. The agenda featured items such as tropical forests, the rise of illegal trade in ivory, and preparations for the triennial Conference of the Parties, which is to take place in March 2013 in Thailand.
