The Belgian One Health network (BEOH) invited Belgian scientists, policy makers and civil society on the 23th of November to discuss how the Green Deal(link) can be best supported in our country from a One Health perspective.

background information
The current COVID-19 pandemic, but also other disease outbreaks of animal origin such as SARS and Ebola, and their dramatic societal and economic costs show the importance of applying a One Health approach across sectors, as a matter of urgency.
The GREEN DEAL is a new growth strategy that aims to transform the EU into a fair and prosperous society, with a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050 and where economic growth is decoupled from resource use. It also aims to protect, conserve and enhance the EU's natural capital, and protect the health and well-being of citizens from environment-related risks and impacts. At the same time, this transition must be just and inclusive.
It provides for the inclusion and strengthening of synergies from different sectors including climate, energy, transport, industrial policy, agriculture, biodiversity, building renovation, circular economy or even product policy in which the interconnection between the different sectors is essential. It foresees a set of policies and measures to deliver the transformative change we need across all sectors.
These activities will potentially trigger substantial change in research and education, therefore public participation and confidence in the transition is paramount if policies are to work and be accepted. For the Green Deal to be a success a new pact is needed, bringing together civil society, national, regional, local authorities, knowledge institutes and industry, to collaborate closely with the EU’s institutions and consultative bodies.
The overall objective of this event is to stimulate a greater cooperation and synergy between experts working in various fields, policy makers and civil society in order to enable and operationalize a One Health approach in support of the European Green deal. This event also aims to strengthen and enlarge the Belgian One Health network (BeOH) and its relevance to science, policy and practice.
