In order to provide high quality scientific opinions, EFSA must have a way of effectively sharing the considerable scientific excellence available in Europe.

To this end, and in accordance with Article 36 of the Founding Regulation of the Authority and with the priority which it attaches to a reinforcement of cooperation and networking in Europe, the Authority’s Management Board agreed on a list of competent organisations capable of assisting EFSA in its tasks (Regulation (EC) No 178/2002).

Competent organisations on this list are, in principle, approved to undertake work on behalf of EFSA in fields such as:

  • Data collection;
  • Other preparatory work for the development of scientific opinions;
  • Other scientific and technical support tasks, in particular relating to emerging issues and crisis situations.

EFSA may decide to allocate financial support for tasks entrusted to these organisations.

Since organisations evolve and scientific needs may change in response to scientific developments and to reflect the political environment, this is a living list which is subject to additions and alterations. Consequently, it will be updated regularly. EFSA also publishes detailed information on the projects and grants allocated to these organisations.

Not all the organisations mentioned in this list will necessarily undertake work on behalf of EFSA. In principle, they are simply authorised to carry out such tasks and some of them may be specifically appointed by the Authority following calls for proposals. Likewise, other organisations which are not currently on the list may be added in the future.
