Use of alien and locally absent species

The present portal site hosts Belgium’s national register concerning the use of alien and locally absent species in aquaculture, in accordance with Council Regulation (EC) No 708/2007 of 11 June 2007.

Council Regulation (EC) No 708/2007 aims to establish a framework governing aquaculture practices in order to ensure adequate protection of the aquatic environment from the risks associated with the use of non-native and locally absent species in aquaculture. Any movement of alien aquatic organisms to aquaculture facilities therefore requires a permit from the competent authority of destination.

Pursuant to Article 23 of the Council Regulation, the register shall contain all introductions and translocations in Belgium. It shall also provide a historical record of all applications made and the associated documentation gathered before the issue of a permit and during the monitoring period.

As both the Belgian federal authority (as regards marine aquaculture) and the Regions (as regards aquaculture at regional level) are competent for implementing the Regulation, the federal portal site links to each of the registers developed by the federal and regional authorities:
