A study conducted in 2022-2023 examined the opportunities and challenges of aquaculture in the Belgian part of the North Sea. The study concluded that the focus should be on native species and extractive farming methods (i.e., without adding extra nutrients—such as food—or medications to the water), with multiple use of space as a priority.

Currently, commercial aquaculture is only permitted in offshore wind farms and zones designated for Commercial and Industrial Activities, but the new Marine Spatial Plan (2026-2034) will change these regulations.

This study delves into the cultivation of aquatic organisms in Belgian offshore wind farms and explores how nature restoration can contribute to increasing commercial fish stocks. The expansion of the offshore energy sector to the Princess Elisabeth Zone (PEZ) and the repowering of the Eastern Zone offer new opportunities for aquaculture. The report provides concrete recommendations in this regard.

Both studies were commissioned by the Minister for the North Sea and the Marine Environment Department of the FPS Public Health.
