Nele Roppe
is Mental Health and Psychosocial support Advisor at Doctors of the World Belgium.

On 22/03, she participated in the breakoutsession on Refugees and trauma. The subject of her presentation was Mental health on the move.

From missions in countries of origin to projects in Belgium, Docters of the World Belgium has several projects in more than 10 countries, with more than 400 volunteers in Belgium alone. We give a unique perspective on mental health based on stories from the support we provide in countries of origin, transit countries and arrival countries. It is these stories we want to share in order to touch upon several topics.
For this, we bring as much case material as possible and deviate from the usual themes. We leave out themes such as financial and political difficulties for a stretch to talk about cultural differences in mental health care, culture shocks and a Belgian bias in providing mental health support.
We continue this briefly with our main theme ‘access to care for everybody’ (includes also mental health care) and conclude with a hard learned advice, care like you want to be cared for.
