The quality of the indoor air has a direct effect on health. Headaches, irritations of the nose, throat and eyes, airway infections, asthma and other diseases such as cancer are possible effects of a polluted indoor environment. Often the indoor air contains more chemical substances than the outdoor air.

The Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment wants to limit the sources of harmful substances indoors as much as possible, amongst others by establishing strict standards for chemical products and for the use of chemical substances with possible harmful effects with the production of furniture, floor and wall coverings and for building materials. The FPS will also do this by promoting products with an EU Ecolabel (only exists in French, Dutch and German) and by informing consumers concerning the proper use of various products.
