The identification documents for equidae born in Belgium are issued and delivered
- by the "Confédération belge du Cheval" (and its two regional wings CWBC - UELN 056021 and PPV - UELN 056022) for equidae not intended to be entered in a breeding book;
- by a breed society recognised in Belgium for equidae intended to be entered in a breeding book: https://www.fasfc.be/animals/company-lists-and-approved-establishments
Please note that a breed society located in another Member State may be authorised to establish (and deliver) a detailed identification document for an equine animal born in Belgium provided that:
- it has been authorised to extend its activity on Belgian soil; and
- it has signed a contract with the FPS Health and the "Confédération belge du Cheval ASBL" concerning the modalities for delivering the identification document and for exchanging data with HorseID.

Equine animals are identified in Belgium by means of a transponder
Legislation is being adapted to use the country code from 2024 onwards.
The single lifetime identification document
The single lifetime identification document for equine animals is delivered in Belgium in a 'detailed' format for all equidae.
The identification documents delivered in Belgium until December 31, 2022 according to the model of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/262 laying down rules pursuant to Council Directives 90/427/EEC and 2009/156/EC as regards the methods for the identification of equidae (Equine Passport Regulation) are considered valid.
The new model established by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/963 will be used gradually from September 1, 2022 and will be mandatory from January 1, 2023.

Belgium made use of the derogation concerning kept equine animals living under semi-wild conditions for 8 entities.
