This study includes the compilation and completion of an inventory of heritage-listed shipwrecks located on the bottom of the Belgian part of the North Sea. The inventory contains information about the condition of the wreck, but also about the fauna and flora which can be found in and around the wreck. Especially the latter helps to determine which wrecks have priority for management measures, such as increased protection or removal of litter.
This study was carried out by the Flemish Institute for the Sea on behalf of the Marine Environment Service in 2020.
More information on underwater cultural heritage and an interactive map of the 55 recognised wrecks can be found on the website of the FPS Mobility and Transport.
