INFORMATION ABOUT MPOX
MPOX is a viral infection caused by the mpox virus. This virus belongs to the same family as the smallpox virus but typically causes a milder illness. Although MPOX has been known for decades in various African countries, outbreaks outside Africa were rare and limited until 2022.
In 2022, we saw a major outbreak in Europe and other parts of the world for the first time, caused by the West African variant (Clade II). This outbreak led to increased vigilance and preventive measures worldwide.
Currently, we are seeing an accelerated spread of the Central African variant (Clade Ib) in Africa. It is not yet scientifically clear whether this variant can cause a more severe clinical picture. The first case of MPOX Clade Ib in Europe has now been detected in Sweden.
Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and taking precautionary measures to prevent potential spread to Europe. Ongoing research is being conducted to learn more about this new variant and develop effective prevention and treatment methods.
We recommend visiting this website regularly for the most recent updates and recommendations regarding MPOX. By staying well-informed, we can together limit the risks of this infectious disease and protect public health.
