Belgian environmental performance in report 

With the Environmental Performance Review (EPR), the OECD is examining Belgian environmental policies. The European Environment Agency is doing the same with the state of the environment in the European Union and its partner countries via SOER 2020 (State and Outlook Environmental Report). The aim is to evaluate the way in which environmental policies are implemented in Belgium (EPR) and to assess the state of the environment in Europe and the extent to which the objectives defined for 2030 and 2050 can be achieved (SOER). The federal and regional administrations in charge of the environment in Belgium welcome this evaluation exercise. During a first exchange in 2020, the administrations commented, detailed and defended their assessment and approved the OECD recommendations.  

On 31 March 2021, the OECD will present the results of Belgium's Environmental Performance Review (EPR) based on an independent assessment conducted in 2020 and will highlight targeted recommendations to improve policies that have an impact on the environment. 

For its part, the European Environment Agency identifies the main environmental trends in the EU in its report "European environment - state and outlook 2020". It is the 6th European report since 1995. 

These reports come at a time when sustainability challenges require structural solutions. The major challenge of this century is how to achieve development worldwide that balances societal, economic and environmental considerations. Sustainable development must become the guiding principle for ambitious and coherent policies and actions throughout society. 

A joint presentation is being organised on 31 March 2021 by Dr. Rodolfo Lacy, Director of the Environment Division of the OECD and Dr. Hans Bruyninckx, Director of the European Environment Agency (EEA) to discuss the environmental objectives for 2030 and 2050.
