In addition to hazard pictograms and hazard statements, a hazard label of a substance or mixture will also contain warning phrases (or R-phrases). These warning phrases will also disappear at the latest by 1 June 2015 and will be replaced by new hazard statements (or H-phrases).

R-phrases point to specific hazards

Warning phrases show which characteristics of a substance or mixture generate an intrinsic hazard and what people should be aware of as a result of that. They each have a certain code and can appear in a simple (e.g. R35) or combined form (e.g. R36/38).

H- and EUH-phrases take over their role…

The new CLP legislation introduces adjusted criteria for the classification of substances and mixtures and therefore it has been decided to change the existing system of the R-phrases to a new type of hazard statements, which is presented by H- and EUH-phrases. EUH-phrases are hereby supplemental statements that are only used in the EU. All labels will be provided with these new statements at the latest by 1 June 2015 although there is still a transitional period of 2 years for existing stocks. A useful overview table “Hazard statements” contains the list with all hazard statements.
