An application dossier was opened by the FPS Public Health (the national plant protection organization (NPPO) in Belgium) in cooperation with the Royal Mint of Belgium, for issuance of a 2 EURO commemorative coin for circulation. This initiative, undertaken in coordination with FAO and the IPPC Secretariat, is part of the International Year of Plant Health (2020).

The objectives of the International Year of Plant Health are:

  • highlighting the importance of plant health to improve food security, protect the environment and biodiversity and stimulate economic development;
  • to generate a greater global collaboration to support plant health policies at all levels, which will contribute significantly to the UN's sustainable development goals.

We are pleased to be able to announce that the European Commission has recently given its approval and that the dossier has been approved. The circulation throughout Europe of this coin issued by Belgium will give even more visibility to the International Year of Plant Health in 2020.

At the national level, the procedure is therefore following its course: the Royal Mint of Belgium has drafted a Royal Decree which follows its internal procedure. The coins will be struck by the Royal Dutch Mint, which in January 2018 obtained the public procedure for the monetization and granting of exploitation rights for the production of euro coins on behalf of the Royal Mint of Belgium. An official coin presentation event will be organized in the first quarter of 2020 in cooperation with the Royal Mint of Belgium and the Royal Dutch Mint, which operates in Belgium under the name ‘piècescommemoratives.be'.
