SARS-CoV-2 and organs and human body material (HBM) intended for transplantation: scientific status report and practical guidelines for transplant centres and HBM establishments
So far, no transmission of COVID-19 through organ or tissue transplantation has been reported, except for lung transplants. But, as SARS-CoV-2 has been detected in many tissues and cells, the possibility of such transmission cannot be totally ruled out.
In the current epidemiological context, a thorough history to identify symptoms indicative of COVID-19 therefore remains essential for living donors, and screening by PCR test for SARS-CoV-2 for deceased donors. In its report 9713, the Superior Health Council proposes a practical diagram for each situation (living organ donor, living human body material (HBM) donor, deceased organ donor and deceased HBM-donor). This report can also serve as a basis for addressing any future pandemics.
